Helping Everyone Communicate
At Allied Therapy, we believe everyone deserves a way to express themselves. For children and adults who are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication, we offer Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) assessment and support.
We provide augmentative communication assessments, AAC device evaluations, and ongoing therapy in your home, online, or in our Halifax clinic to support families across Nova Scotia.

Who We Help

Our AAC services support:
Non-speaking children and adults
Individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, apraxia, or genetic conditions
People with complex communication needs who may benefit from a speech device
Families who are unsure where to start or what system is best
Schools or teams needing support around AAC use and integration

Our AAC Assessment Process

1. Augmentative Communication Assessment
We begin with a thorough evaluation of communication skills, motor ability, vision, hearing, and daily needs. We observe the person in familiar settings (if possible) and learn from the person's key supports to understand their communication challenges and strengths.

2. AAC Device Evaluation
We try out low-tech and high-tech tools such as:
-
Picture boards or communication books
-
Tablets or speech-generating devices
-
Switch-access tools (as needed)
-
We consider what fits best for the person’s life, and we explain everything in simple, clear terms.

3. Family Training & Support
We guide you through choosing a device, potential funding steps, and learning how to use it in everyday life. We offer direct therapy and coaching to help communication grow.

Benefits of AAC Support
A voice for expressing wants, needs, feelings, and ideas
More connection with family, peers, and support teams
More participation in school, work, or community life
Confidence for the non-speaking person and their caregivers
Less frustration or behaviour related to communication challenges
Let’s Find the Right Voice Together
We’ll help you choose and learn the AAC system that fits your life best.
