From One Parent to Another:
Our Journey with ADHD & Challenging Behaviours
Our seven-year-old daughter started struggling in school. We weren’t sure what to do. Her teacher mentioned that she had trouble focusing, staying in her seat, and following directions. At home, we saw the same things. She would start tasks but wouldn't finish them, interrupt our conversations consistently, and have big emotional outbursts over small frustrations. We were beginning to wonder if she had ADHD, but getting a diagnosis takes time. In the meantime, we needed help.
We knew she was smart and capable, but school was becoming a daily struggle, and she was starting to feel like she was "bad" when she just needed support. That’s when we turned to Allied Therapy for guidance.
The Challenges We Faced
Before therapy, our daughter:
-
Had trouble sitting still and paying attention in class.
-
Struggled to follow multi-step directions, often getting distracted.
-
Acted out impulsively, interrupting and speaking out of turn.
-
Would have meltdowns when things didn’t go as planned.
-
Felt frustrated and misunderstood, which was affecting her self-esteem.
We didn’t want school to become a place she dreaded. We needed tools to help her succeed and feel confident in herself.
What Helped – A Therapy Plan That Worked for Our Family
From the start, the therapists at Allied Therapy reassured us that our daughter wasn’t alone in this. They created a plan that was practical, strengths-based, and easy to use at home and school.
Occupational Therapy: She worked with an Occupational Therapist (OT) to learn strategies for self-regulation and focus, including movement breaks, fidget tools, and sensory-friendly strategies that helped her stay engaged in class.
Behaviour Therapy: A Behaviour Therapist introduced positive reinforcement techniques to help her manage impulsivity and frustration, using rewards and structured routines to encourage positive behaviour.

Speech- Language Pathology: She worked with a Speech Therapist on expressing her thoughts in a clear manner, organizing her work, and her reading skills that were causing some of the frustration.
The Progress We Saw
After a few months, we started noticing real changes in our child:
-
She became a stronger reader which results in less frustration
-
She was able to sit through her class without disrupting her peers learning with the use of fidgets and movement breaks
-
She becomes less impulsive in class, not needing to interrupt the teacher and her classmates.
Most importantly, we felt hopeful again. Instead of feeling lost, we felt empowered with practical tools to support our child.
