From One Parent to Another:
Our Journey with Autism & Communication
When our three-year-old son was diagnosed with autism, we didn’t know where to start. We were overwhelmed, unsure of what steps to take, and worried about how to support our child in the best way possible. He had limited words, often got frustrated because he couldn’t express what he wanted, and preferred to play alone rather than engage with us or other children.
Like many parents in our position, we wanted to help but didn’t have the tools or knowledge to do so. That’s when we found Allied Therapy and it made all the difference.
The Challenges We Faced
When we first started therapy, our child:
-
Used only a few words or gestures to communicate.
-
Would have meltdowns when he couldn’t express his needs.
-
Seemed uninterested in playing with others
-
Struggled with transitions and following instructions.
We knew our child had so much to say, we just needed to figure out how to help him find his voice.
What Helped was a Therapy Plan That Worked for Our Family.
From the very first session, our therapists met us where we were. They listened to our concerns and created a customized plan that worked not only for our child but for us as parents, too.
Speech Therapy: Our Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) introduced an iPad with a communication app to help our child express his needs while still working on developing his spoken words. We also learned how to use play to encourage communication which is something that felt natural and fun!
Occupational Therapy: Our Occupational Therapist (OT) helped us understand our child’s sensory needs and showed us how to create a more structured, calm environment so he could regulate his body leading to focus and and better engagement.
Parent Coaching: This was a game changer. The therapists taught us how to use visual schedules and structured play routines at home. These small changes made a huge difference in our daily life.
